Welcome to St Charles, Missouri.
St. Charles is a city located in St. Charles County, Missouri. It lies just to the northwest of St. Louis, Missouri, on the Missouri River, and played for a time a significant role in the United States' westward expansion. It is the second oldest city west of the Mississippi, founded in 1765 as Les Petites Cotes, "The Little Hills", by Louis Blanchette, a French Canadian fur trader and was the last "civilized" stop for the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
Settled by French traders in 1769, it was the state capital from 1821 to 1826. Population: 61,200. Historic Saint Charles has a unique historical perspective, beautiful sites, friendly people and a pace just a little slower than that of a big city. Saint Charles has carefully and lovingly preserved its heritage.

From the ten-block nationally Registered Historic District, with its brick streets, gas lights and Missouri's First State Capitol, to the 26-block nationally Registered Frenchtown Neighborhood District and Lindenwood University campus, Saint Charles is a destination for almost one million visitors each year who experience the charm and beauty of a city that has been welcoming visitors since 1769.
It is the site of many historic firsts including the Lewis and Clark Rendezvous, Zebulon Pike Expedition, Missouri's First State Capitol, the start of the Boone's Lick Trail and the drafting site of the Santa Fe Trail. Today, it serves as the county seat of the state's fastest growing county and is the second largest city in the St. Louis metropolitan area.
Though preserving it's rich heritage is important to this historical city, emphasis is placed on progressing toward new growth and development, making St. Charles an industrious, vibrant community in one of the most dynamic regions of the country.
Its manufactures include clothing, shoes, metal products, electronic and computer equipment, and wood cabinets. St. Charles began as an important trading post, and the city served as the state capital from 1821 to 1826. Lindenwood Univ. and the Sacred Heart Convent (1818) are there. Of interest are historic Main Street and the old capitol building.

United Services 26th annual dinner auction, held Aug. 28, at the Columns in St. Charles, raised more than $72,000. The proceeds of the event will be used to enhance preschool and therapy programs provided to more than 1,155 students this school year.
